The New Typography: A Handbook for Modern Designers
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (November, 1998)
Authors: Jan Tschichold, Ruari McLean, and Robin Kinross
Average review score:

Good Historical Value, But No Applicable Lessons
As other reviewers have written before me, this book surely has an historical value to it. It allows the reader to have a quick glance to a particular historical moment of typography in pre-WWII Germany, written in a Marxist tone. Also, the layout of the book is a beauty in itself, with its glossy paper and sans-serif Futura font. But that is pretty much it, unless you want to read it because you are a student in History of Typography. Do not expect to learn basic or advanced typographic elements here. If you want that, read "The Elements of Typographic Style" by Robert Bringhurst instead.

Best for those interested in pre WWII type history
I was expecting something more contemporary when bought this book. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book and have been glad I bought it. It is true, the author overstates his points on what constitutes good vs. bad typography, even going so far as to make philosphical "natural law" arguments in favor of good type! The social scientist in me enjoyed the Marxist overtones to his diatribe, and the artist in me enjoyed the period type of his Weimar Republic era work. While I won't suggest that one couldn't learn a thing or two from his principals of the "new typography", to my mind this is a book for art/social historians.

Impresionante estudio historico y psicologico

Costa Rica: The Last Country the Gods Made
Published in Hardcover by Falcon Publishing Company (October, 1993)
Authors: Adrian Colesberry, Brass McLean, Kimberly Parsosn, and Kimberly Parsons
Average review score:

A book to pique your interest
Whether the small Central American country has always been your secret destination or even if you have never given Costa Rica a single thought, Brass McLean's and Adrian Colesberry have produced one of those rare travelougues that can pique the interest and stir the passion of anyone who thumbs through it. Sporting stark and evocative photography by Kimberly Parsons, the book effortlessly details the distinct history and culture of a country you'll want to experience for yourself after reading this wonderful coffee-table book.

A cornicopia of rich facts and visual splendor!
Frist offf, this edition is signed by both authors! Like no other book on Costa Rica out there! The rainforests, the active volcanoes, the green turtles, the white-water rafting, Costa Rica's role in the iran-contra affair, coffee platantions...it just covers everything in erudite but often humourous prose! The best thing: Little yellow sidebars at the end of the chapters on random subjects like how ants eat in the rainforest, to why Costa Rica was never settled by the Spainards! Also, some wild and gorgeous and yes, even kooky photos of the highest quality.
Grab it!

It covers everything about the country and has gorgeous pics
I bought this book last year after I came back from a trip to Costa Rica. I wish I had known about it beforehand! The writers are very passionate about everything Costa Rican from coffee to indigenous peoples, from ants to women's issues, from bananas to religion! My favorite chapter was "House Made of Rain", an exploration of the rain forest from the point of view of a bird--you'll never forget it! By the way, the book is a beautiful hardcover, not paperback.

Daily Life in Chaucer's England
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (October, 1995)
Authors: Jeffrey L. Singman and Will McLean
Average review score:

Daily Life in Chaucer's England
This is a good book as a general introduction to the mid-late 14th century. It is well organised with a nice assortment of information to get you started on the wonderful road of re-enactment.

Fantastic! A must for any Medieval English Literature reader
This book will take you right away in what life raelly was in Medieval England. It covers all social classes and let you know the differences between them, not only on wealth amount, but also on diet, pastimes and clothing. It also contains some clothing patterns and recipes of the time. After you read it, you'll be able to understand the mentality of these people and how it is reflected in their literature.

The most incredible book I've ever seen for Medievalists
Having trudged through literally dozens of books on the fourteenth century, it was delightfully refreshing to read _Daily Life in Chaucer's England_. I do Medieval Re-creation in my spare time, and found this one of the best resources in print. No more searching through dozens of books to find what a peasant's shoes look like, or what a wealthly merchant would be wearing. From the Lord's Prayer in Latin and Olde English, to the rules for a medieval version of backgammon, this book has it all. With just enough detail to give a thorough idea of the times, and a detail bibliography, this book should be the launch pad for anyone interested in the fourteenth century

GOLF DIGEST'S BOOK OF DRILLS : GOLF DIGEST'S BOOK OF DRILLS
Published in Hardcover by Pocket Books (November, 1990)
Author: Jim Mclean
Average review score:

Practice Drills for the Perfect Game
Practice makes perfect - so goes the saying. This holds true in that wonderful game of golf. The Book of Drills teaches the golfer (of whatever skill level, from beginner to competitor) to hone on his skills and play better golf. One may also use it to aid a beginning golfer - a must for all golfers, especially instructors.

How to Fix What Ails Your Swing
To change a swing you've got to groove it. To do that, you need a drill. Here is a book of over 100 of them, from a full-swing to short game, to alignment and warmup.

McClain does a great job here, and the illustrations are helpful. Excellent helps for correcting a slice and increasing club head speed.

Wow, what an effective book!
This book is great. It lowered my score by ten strokes. I am only fifteen, five foot five, playing for two years and I hit the ball an average of 215 yards off the tee and fairly straight. I have hit straght shots up to 260 yards, when my previous average was 165.

Listening Hearts: Discerning Call in Community
Published in Paperback by Morehouse Publishing (May, 1991)
Authors: Suzanne G. Farnham, Joseph P. Gill, and R. Taylor McLean
Average review score:

Incredibly helpful
Six years ago, my priest used this book with a group of seniors at Gordon College to help us learn more about listening to God in the context of testing our call to ordained ministry. This book is simply incredible. God used it powerfully in my life!

Thoughtful, prayerful, wise, and sober
The issue of discernment, or attempting to understand God's will for us in our lives and the direction it should take, is one on which regrettably too little attention has been spent in the Church until recently. This book answers that dearth of material by presenting what proves to be both an emanently practical and highly instructive method and motive.

The method was developed in the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland with great assistance and input from members of the area Quaker community. The Society of Friends influence shows prominently, as the main focus of the process (and it is a process, as opposed to a goal in and of itself) is to discover and arrive at consensus regarding God's revealed will through reflective prayer rather than convince anyone of anything via cerebral justifications. For this group, the method became the first step in the ordination process, though they are quick to note that the method need not be limited to those seeking ordination, but rather can be used by anyone seeking a discernment of God's will for his or her life.

Listening Hearts is replete with quotations and an exhaustive bibliography. At the very least, it serves as a starting point for someone considering a time of discernment. The book is not discouraging of ordained vocations, but instead acknowledges that often discerners too quickly latch onto ordination as the only answer to a vocation in the Church. The method emphasizes prayer and heartfelt reflection as the main means of determining God's will, which is as it should be.

Those seeking a time of discernment should read this book for "the other side" of the discussion -- a viewpoint which urges caution, deliberatation, and openness to the multiplicity of God's purposes. It provides a strong balance, essential to any spiritual journey.

A must for anyone discerning God's will in their life.
The method used in creating this book is as moving and powerful as the material itself. The authors centered on prayer and meditation and worked with the Holy Spirit to create a book of sayings that ring true at every turn. But, the book is much more than a group of sayings. It lays out a path for discernment that begins with God, and leads through the self to the community. This path is clearly paved with the Holy Spirit and is ready for all who are willing to make themselves available to God's will.

Fairy Dreams
Published in Hardcover by Scholastic (October, 2000)
Author: Carol McLean-Carr
Average review score:

run free in your dreams
The beauty of Carol MacLean Carr's "Fairy Dreams" surpasses that of most similar books. Each picture in this book is filled with a sense of life and love.

"Fairy Dreams" is essentially a far more beautiful, even lyrical version of the old "Where's Waldo?" books.

The fairies leave things lying around in each picture. The job of the reader is to pick them out of the background. Such books do not test the knowledge of the reader, but rather the fullness and keenness of the eye. One must "know" how to see things skillfully.

This is all fine and dandy, but I'd recommend losing yourself in the pictures and words before you go searching for the items. This stuff is just plain eye-popping. Spend some time with it and let your imagination run free.

I give "Fairy Dreams" a high recommendation.

Fairy Lovers Don't Miss This One!
So.......Beautiful.........So........ Magical.......
Every turn of the page is like a new two paged mural, which there are 13 of these. They are so stunning it is hard to focus your eyes on the reading of the story. Which is also magical and fun. I loved that the text rhymed. It takes you on a journey from a little girls room into the fairy realm. Each page is a fun challenge to find an item a fairy dropped and lost within the picture. Even my five year old grandson had fun helping me find these well hidden objects. It was challenging, but we did find them all. Just when you think the fun is over you get a surprise at the end of the story to go back and find more things. A joyful book for ALL AGES!! Would buy this book for fairy lovers, of any age.

WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF!
This book is extraordinarily beautiful. You don't need to read a word; I am talking breathtaking! WOW!

What I like best is the intricacy of it all. One can almost open the book and enter into the magical fairy world. The layout is absolutely perfect from cover to cover. You have got to see this to believe it! Every page is a visual feast for your eyes. You could spend a long time just absorbing the beauty without trying to find the hidden objects in the pictures. Another reviewer was correct about it being similiar to I-Spy books but so much better in my opinion!

There are not only fairies pictured but everything mystical: crystal balls, unicorns, gnomes, dragons, a sorceress, knights in full armor with swords, flying swan-shaped boats, jewels, mermaids, horses, and musical instruments all with lavish backgrounds and framed in edges. I repeat you have got to see this to believe it!

This book should proudly be displayed on a book holder placed on a shelf for you to admire. I have mine in the center of my fairy collection.

Thank you Carol! Your hard, time-consuming work really paid off! You are a true artist!

Automatic Flight Control Systems
Published in Textbook Binding by Prentice Hall (31 December, 1969)
Author: Donald McLean
Average review score:

The publication date is 1990 NOT 1969.
Please not that the publication date is 1990 NOT 1969. I have a copy of the book.

Thorough guide to all aspects of flight control systems
This is an excellent text, equally useful to both under and post graduate students and pilots wishing to understand the subtle nuances of automatic flight control system. The author provides many historical and anecdotal interludes in between well detailed and properly mathematically formed treatment of many aspects of the control of flight dynamics. The book details much needed, and better coverage of topics not covered by other texts, such as gust response, and automatic gust-load alleviation controller design. I thoroughly recommend this book, as an excellent, and more importantly, readable text on flight control systems.

The 10-Minute Snook Book
Published in Paperback by McLean Multimedia, inc. (01 April, 1999)
Author: John McLean
Average review score:

Nothing new here
This book actually can be read in 10 minutes. The information is very thin. If you've ever fished Florida's inshore area, you'll learn nothing new here. I was hoping for something specific to Snook that might be insightful or new. It wasn't there. And it's not like I'm some great fisherman either. I've never caught a snook but I could have already told you most of these things. If you've never fished before or perhaps very little, maybe worth your while. Even then, there's not much here.

Concise, to the point, a sure recipe for success!
The 10 minute Snook Book is the way to go for a no nonsense factual approach to catching snook. The tips are great for other species too! The Blue Marlin Chronicles strongly recommends this book.

New to Fl.,New to fishing, book easy to understand, loved it!
A new Fl. resident and never heard of "snook" until I went to get my fishing license.I asked for a short, easy to read book on the subject and am pleasently surprised.I would recomend this book to everyone! A guide to the enjoyment and sport of fishing for Snook! Mr. McLean really cares about the fish and water of Florida.

Schaum's Outline of Engineering Mechanics
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Trade (01 May, 1997)
Authors: E. W. Nelson, Charles L. Best, and W. G. McLean
Average review score:

Good supplementary text
I have always liked the Schaum's series of books. They are straightforward and to the point. This text was no exception.

The most important aspect of this book is that it can be used as a supplement to most of the popular texts. I used it along with Beer & Johnston and Shames.

Quite a useful book on a difficult, hands-on subject.

Engineer This!
I wholeheartedly recommend this treatise on statics anddynamics, one which I am surprised has not been nominated for aPulitzer Prize. The explanations of the concepts are impeccable, butbuy this book for the cool Venn Diagrams that illustrate most pages.

Of course, one should expect this book to be of high quality, as one of its authors is Dr. Charles Best. Dr. Best is famous for having taught in the Engineering Department at Lafayette College for decades, chairing its Bachelor of Arts in Engineering degree program.

A good supliment
I have had Statics and will be taking Dynamic's next semester. I bought this book so I could get a head start on next semester as I heard the professor is tough and the material is difficult.

The parts that cover Statics were a very good supliment to what I had learned last semester. Kind of like the Reader's Digest version, I couldn't figure out what parts they had left out. It seemed pretty complete to me. They even covered stuff we didn't. We didn't have anything in our class wrt differential equations, but this book did. Since I have had diff eq, it was nice to see it being put to use and I learned something.

On the Dynamic's side, it is a bit of a tough go. I am using this as a primary/only text and do not have the benifit of an instructor. I am wading through slowly. I wish there was a bit more explination before the examples. This is where an in class text book would be helpful. I believe that this book will be a valuable resource when I actually start the class.
